African language teaching
Not cataloguing languages: teaching them. Learning, intergenerational transmission and preservation of linguistic heritage.
Colombia holds Palenquero, the only creole language in the Americas combining Spanish lexicon with the grammar of Bantu languages —Ki-Kongo and Ki-Mbundu. UNESCO recognised the cultural space of San Basilio de Palenque as Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
This is not about cataloguing languages but teaching them. We work on learning and intergenerational transmission of Palenquero and of contemporary African languages, because a language not spoken at home is lost within a generation.
