About

Why Ife

The Ife Center reclaims the name and ancestral power of the ancient Yoruba city-state: Ilé-Ife, the cradle of humanity. In Yoruba tradition, Ife is where creation began —the point from which the earth spread over the waters— and the spiritual centre of a network of city-states across what is now Nigeria, Benin and Togo.

The Ife Center is a commitment to the historical reparation of African peoples in Colombia and the world, from the root and from ancestral knowledge. We believe our reparation requires an epistemic, cultural, philosophical and political return to our origins and our roots; that we recover the wisdom, knowledge and practices of our ancestors; and that we reconnect and organise with our extended family in Africa and its sixth region to advance collective pan-Africanist liberation.

Ilé-Ife lies in present-day Osun State, southwest Nigeria. Oral tradition holds it as the origin of humanity and of the Yoruba peoples.
