Territorial and environmental governance
Territorial autonomy and environmental stewardship: the relationship between people, territory and nature, and collective decision-making over both.
Law 70 linked territorial rights to environmental protection from the outset: collective title arrives together with the duty to conserve. Community councils are, in practice, environmental authorities over some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet.
Exercising that authority requires information, instruments and institutional backing. We work to strengthen the councils so that environmental governance is real rather than a figure on paper, and so decisions about water, forest and subsoil are taken from within the territory.
